FAQ: Platforms, Price, Players and More
Quick answer
The questions that come up most about Backrooms: Code Yellow, answered for the Early Access launch build (September 21, 2026). For strategy questions, start with the how to play guide; if something here goes stale with a patch, tell us and it gets fixed.
When did Backrooms: Code Yellow come out?
September 21, 2026, on Steam in Early Access, developed and published by GameMechanic.
What platforms is it on? Is it coming to PS5, Xbox or console?
Windows via Steam, and nothing else at launch. No console port has been announced - the PS5, Xbox and "console" searches around this game are players asking, not plans. If that changes, it lands on this page and on the update tracker.
Does it support Mac?
No. The Steam listing is Windows-only and no Mac build has been announced, despite regular community requests.
How many players does it support? Can you play solo?
One to six players, online co-op. Single-player is officially supported, but the work is designed around a squad - solo runs exist for learning, not for clearing the task board.
Is there crossplay?
There is only one platform (Windows/Steam), so there is nothing to crossplay between. Everyone you play with needs the same build.
Is there a demo?
As of launch week, no demo is listed on Steam - the store shows the Early Access game itself and nothing else.
How much does it cost?
Check the current price on the Steam page - regional pricing applies and Early Access games run sales. Steam's standard refund policy applies if you change your mind.
Is it similar to Lethal Company or REPO?
Players file it in the same genre family - squad, procedural site, task list, tense return trip - but the pace is slower and exploration-first. The how to play guide goes deeper on the comparison.
What's the Early Access plan? Will it get updates?
The developer has said the procedural generation was built so new points of interest and encounters can be added over time, and the game entered Early Access on September 21. No formal roadmap has been published yet; official updates get logged on our patch notes page.
Is it related to Kane Pixels' Backrooms?
It is inspired by the Kane Pixels lore and its tone, per the developer's own posts, but it is not affiliated with Kane Parsons' series.
What are "still lifes"?
The developer groups your research subjects as life forms, still lifes and entities - the term covers the things in the complex that are not clearly alive, and not clearly safe either. Treat anything human-shaped at distance as unknown.
Are there codes?
No. This is a paid co-op game with no code redemption system.
Who made it?
GameMechanic, a small independent studio. The game is its current Backrooms project, built in the open with frequent community posts.
