Co-op Guide: Playing With 1-6 Players
Quick answer
Backrooms: Code Yellow is built for groups: 1-6 players online co-op, with single-player supported for anyone who wants to learn the systems without dragging friends through their mistakes. There is no console version, no Mac build and no crossplay - the game lives entirely in the Windows/Steam ecosystem at launch.
How teaming up works
- Lobbies run up to six players; invite through your Steam friends list.
- Solo is officially supported, but the task list is designed for a crew - expect to leave money on the table alone.
- Steam Family Sharing is listed on the store page, so normal library sharing applies.
Team composition that works
- Pairs, always. Two-person units cover documentation jobs faster and bail each other out.
- A dedicated recorder. One player owns the camera work so evidence quality stops being an accident.
- A navigator. Someone tracks the route and landmarks; in a generated complex, memory is a skill.
- A driver. If the rover is in the run, it needs an owner - not four people arguing about it mid-chase.
Communication
The store listing does not advertise built-in voice chat, so most groups run Steam voice or their usual party chat. Check the in-game options after your first launch patch - if that changes, it lands on this page.
Platform reality check
Windows via Steam. That means: no PS5 or Xbox version, no Switch, no Mac, no crossplay, and Xbox/Quest/mobile questions are requests rather than plans as of launch week. Steam Deck status has not been officially rated yet - if you play on Deck, treat it as unverified.
Getting a new group through week one
- First run: shallow, no heroics. Learn the camera, the return route and each other's voices.
- Rotate the recorder job between sessions so everyone can work the equipment.
- Review what went wrong after each failed run out loud - the game punishes unspoken assumptions.
